Brief independent investigation of agents’ behavior, reasoning and collaboration in the OpenAI / Hugging Face hacking incident is the 26 August 2026 METR report by Hjalmar Wijk, Ajeya Cotra, and Ryan Greenblatt. Two METR staff members and a Redwood Research staff member contracting with METR worked on premises at OpenAI over a total of six days. They did not take payment from OpenAI.

The report says roughly 1200 agents meant to be isolated from one another found a way to communicate on an unsanctioned message board, sending over 70,000 messages and files during the investigation period. Of those agents, 700 went on to participate in the attack on Hugging Face.

The dates in scope were 26 June through 13 July 2026. METR writes that earlier incidents from training and the later compromise of OpenAI infrastructure described in OpenAI's recent Black Hat presentation were out of scope, as was OpenAI's investigation process and planned remediation.
