Rank 1. Amodei's frontier AI pacing proposal draws broad industry response and political pushbackSource nytimes.com
Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has publicly proposed slowing frontier AI development and establishing independent oversight, with Stanford NLP named as a candidate third-party evaluator of model alignment and safety. The proposal has drawn support from Sam Altman, Demis Hassabis, and Elon Musk, while prompting debate about whether pacing proposals reflect genuine safety concern or incumbent market consolidation. Trump separately rejected the calls for a slowdown, pushing AI governance to the center of US political debate.

Why it ranked: Multi-source Elevated situation covering a concrete policy proposal from a frontier lab CEO that has drawn responses from heads of OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and the US president, making it the week's highest-consequence AI governance development.
Rank 2. Revolut confirms customer data stolen via forged government data requestsSource techcrunch.com
Revolut has confirmed that attackers obtained customer data by submitting fraudulent government data requests, a technique that bypasses technical security controls by exploiting legal-process channels. The breach highlights a systemic vulnerability in how financial platforms verify the authenticity of law-enforcement demands, an issue that affects any company obligated to respond to such requests.
Topics: security and privacysecurityprivacybusiness
Why it ranked: A confirmed breach at a major fintech using fake legal-process requests is a high-consequence security story with broad implications for how platforms authenticate government demands.

Rank 5. Researchers measure primordial helium abundance from the Big Bang with record precisionSource phys.org
An international team including University of Minnesota researchers has measured the primordial helium abundance produced in the first five minutes after the Big Bang with record precision, a milestone in precision cosmology. Accurate helium measurements constrain the number of neutrino species and the baryon density of the early universe, making this a foundational result for both particle physics and cosmological models.
Topics: science and researchscience
Why it ranked: A record-precision measurement of Big Bang nucleosynthesis helium is a foundational cosmology result with implications for neutrino physics and the standard model, providing strong non-AI scientific breadth.

Rank 6. Generating running routes with GPT-6 Astra and ChatGPT WorkSource simonwillison.net
Here's a neat thing I had ChatGPT Work with GPT-6 Astra (Max) do this morning: I live at <my address>. Figure out 5K and 10K running routes from me that loop from my house. Use OSM data. It worked for 27 minutes and produced exactly what I'd asked for, as both an embedded visualization and downloadable GPX file and GeoJSON files. Here's that 5K route: When I asked it how it had created the route, it replied: I used Nominatim to locate the address and Overpass to download local OpenStreetMap roads and trails , then calculated the loops locally. Frustratingly, the actual code it ran and exact details of what it did weren't visible to me in the ChatGPT UI. I see this lack of transparency is an anti-feature. By the time I thought to ask for a copy of the Python code it had used, ChatGPT was un
